I’m sure you’ve all been in a situation where you’re just minding your own business, and then suddenly find yourself in the midst of a crisis or emergency. Perhaps you’re driving down the highway, enjoying the ride, when someone swerves in front of you. Your heart thumps as you swerve to avoid an accident. It all happened in just an instant. Or maybe you got up one morning without a care in the world only to cut your finger with the knife while slicing open your morning bagel.

A case in point is a situation that happened to me a while back. It was about 7:30 in the evening, when I walked into my office to grab a book from my desk. But unbeknownst to me, when I entered my office, the door had closed halfway behind me, and as I turned to exit, I walked right into the corner of the door and nearly knocked myself out! Blood was everywhere and I was disoriented. As I gathered my wits, I realized that this was the first time that I have had an accident, while living alone, since my wife passed away in 2002. I probably should have gone to the emergency room but you know how we men are. So I cleaned myself up and it actually looks pretty good today, minus a small scar.

My point in telling you this is to underline the importance of being prepared to react to the unexpected. In this situation I did three things: I calmed myself, assessed the situation and then took action. Whatever your goals are, just know that life has a way of constantly surprising you. And the better prepared you are, the better off and more successful you will be. So the next time you suddenly find yourself in a tough situation, calm yourself, assess the situation and then take action!

Wishing You Great Health,
Dr. John H. Sklare
