At what point do you think a person needs to consider going into inpatient treatment as opposed to working through the 12 steps while staying engaged with their everyday work and living environments?
My issue is with food addiction (binge eating) so defining abstinence for myself and putting that into practice is tricky. I have thought about going to a retreat or inpatient treatment centre but most of them are really expensive. It would put me majorly into debt, but on the other hand staying at home and trying to achieve abstinence sometimes feels like trying to shower in the middle of a dust storm. As soon as I have a day or two of abstinence something in my environment sets me off and I'm back into my addictive behaviors. I am not entirely sure if my problem is entirely within my own mind, or whether there's environmental factors that are contributing. I'm finding it hard to put all the pieces of my recovery puzzle together because I am a) really depressed, b) really tired c) really shy and reluctant to ask people for help and accept the help they offer and d) the more I engange in my addictive behaviors the more fearful, confused and indecisive I become and the harder it is to make ANY progress in ANY direction. Is there a right/wrong way to recovery? Am I a failure if I decide to abort the home-based 12 step route and go for inpatient care? I'm confused! Can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you in advance! DC |
