Hi anyone and everyone,
The idea of this thread is only that every morning we make a renewed committment to sobriety. It is at base for people struggling (like me), or who have one day, or "newbies"-this thread is not intimidating, and a smattering of people who are just supportive, whether they have one day or 20 years. I have been dealing with alcoholism for 32+ years, and have been sober 29 (some in a row as long as 13 years) of them, but drat, I occasionally get back to day 1 (today) and need a "family". Anyone care to join? The group: (feel free to add yourname, and copy and re-paste the whole list if you want...with comments as well as you chose to some or all... ((((((Gianna))))))..sorry you are struggling...
My therapist likes to use the illusion of "control" as a feature tool... That works at times...but what works best for me is just gettn on with life. The good thing about the "letting go of control" aspect, is that the illusion is NOT empowered. It really is an illusion for us to live life as though we can control it...

Me Too Gianna,
In the past 17 years I have had many day 1's. Even had 8 years once. I am getting close to a year now. All any of us has is today right? So, Let's deal with today TOGETHER. How about if we join hands? I've got one hand holding yours and the other is extended out to who ever will take it. Nice thread.

I had more relapses than I care to remember, so I hold gratefully on to my clean/sober time. I will not get complacent and I will as ever be holding your hand and everyone else who wants to hold on fast.

Now if you'll permit me to beat a dead horse for a second: There's this guy travelling from NY to LA. As he crosses the Mississippi River at the Arch in St. Louis, his transmission drops third gear. So he gets his transmission fixed which takes a few days. Question: Does he go back to NY and start his trip over? Or does he continue on, grateful that he learned the importance of being prepared while on his journey? That's just my view on Day 1's..... Peace, C |

Oh hey CDawg, That is the point of the whole thread. What does it matter if one has 1000 days of sobriety with 999 of drinking every other day,...or 1000 days in a row.
IMHO, what counts is that we choose to be sober today, this morning, now. I choose (when I am together) to live each day to the fulllest. For instance, I left my studio early today (feeling a little guilty) but I saw an amazing sunset. Do I keep kicking myself for leaving early (although I am still working at home, or do I say, Gosh!! I saw this wonderful thing)!!! You by the way, are very often my biggest inspiration. Is there a better name for this thread? Like, maybe, "today I am not drinking" I dunno. I just wanted a place to log on that would include everyone who wanted to be there, and encourage especially anyone who is struggling. And not exclude all those people who have lots of sobriety. I had a friend who had 38 years, was a staunch AA member, and had one sip of wine. Although he never had another (to my knowledge) he spent the rest of his life-about 6 more years- considering himself a failure. ???????????????????Didn't make sense to me. That is when I stopped with this day-counting business. I think it is fine if you want to do it, and goodness knows it can feel (and is) like a big accomplishment, but it also can be so destructive to self-esteem if you stumble. Blah blah. you get my drift. I'm with you, gianna |

I know this probably causes a storm of protest to break loose and be poured all over me, but...I consider myself being clean and mostly sober. I do drink, once in a while, yes, but I can easily go without it. I got the moderation thing down really well. If there's a six pack around me, I manage to drink only one can of it without any trouble. Focusing on abstaining so much makes ppl so uptight usually.

Something I often suggest is
do something every day to enhance your sobriety. Checking in to a forum is something, and checking in with your peers daily is a great way to keep that up. It doesn't matter whether your goal is 'clean' or 'sober' or both. It is your goal, this is just a means to whatever end you have set for yourself. Talking about values and goals is another useful thing to do.

~Done-With-It!~
Rocketman Gianna Indigo Muse Chordaroys Well I started here on the 25th of April, which is a big day in Oz, we remember those that fought for our freedom and that of others. i thought that it was a good day because these people gave up so much- their lives for me and others, surely I could give up drinking! Give my family a break. I went for a couple of months. Too easy. Then back to the old habits, little by little. Yesterday I signed in again. Read a few posts got the idea but somehow not as inspired to go sober as I was. Just a feeling of shallow resignation. This thread Gianna is timely for me. I need a hand. I am happy to reach to others. Reading your wise words gives me hope and reminds me why I should stay straight. The months I had sober were great, so great I thought I had it controlled. Yeah right. I'm a binge drinker. I don't have any of the physical alcoholic symptoms but I do have a lot of the psycological ones. I'm here because I need it. Thanks for the invitation. Today is the third day (but who is counting), today is the day. I'll drop by tomorrow. Chordaroys __________________ |
