Any suggestions?

Hi All.....

Last Sunday, I was thrown from a horse, the end result is whiplash and broken left wrist ( I am left handed) This morning, I had pins and screws placed in 2 places, they are sticking out, I am in a soft cast. I have been doing the ice every 20 minutes and taking Naproxon but the pain is so unbearable that I cant eat or sleep. I have a script here for Percocet 10/325
#60. I am working on getting them filled but funds are very tight and I dont have it right now. I dont worry about addiction because I am fortunate in that I am not one for taking pills unless desperate, in this case, I am.

Anyone know of anything natural or have any tips from their own experiences that I can try so I can at least get some sleep until I can afford to fill the script? Also, how does one who sleeps on their stomache, sleep with pins sticking out? I keep bumping them and the pain shoots up my arm and makes me lightheaded and fighting to not puke. Mind you, I am looking at a minimum of 2 months before they come out. Aromatherapy is helping me to cope somewhat but not enough. Any input is greatly appreciated!

holy crap that really sucks..get that Percocet refilled ;x I used to..er do take those and they hella help <.< .

Wow that sucks. I just got out of a cast, what a pain in the butt especially when it comes to taking a shower.

Do you have family members or friends that can help with a few bucks?
Maybe the pharmacists can give you 1/2 or even 1/4 of the prescription at a time.
How much are they? If you can't figure anything out, PM me with your address and I'll see what I can do.

Liss, I was going to suggest maybe asking for just a few at a time. I know there is a generic for percocet available. I'm with Rocketman...pm me your info!

Frozen peas (I think) work better than ice--they mold to the shape you need better, but refreeze them fast after you use them. Can you try sleeping in a different position, maybe on your back, propped up by cushions/pillows, and a cushion for your arm? I am a side/stomach sleeper, but when I broke my collarbone into three last year, I got used to sleeping on my back and propped up very fast.

I would also consider calling your doctor and explaining the situation. There may be samples, or another way for him to help. Please keep us posted.

Oh wow Liss, I'm so sorry you're in so much pain. As mentioned try to see if you can just get a few to tide you over for a week, the pain should begin to subside in a couple of days though. Keep it propped up and just rest as much as you can. You're in my prayers for quick healing. *hugs*

Liss, if you have a soft pliable extra bed pillow and some duct tape, yes
I said duct tape, lol, when you go to lie down wrap the pillow around the
soft cast and tape with easily removable duct tape.

This will cushion and protect from bumping the screws.

Also I agree with the others, you can ask for generic and only a few at a time.

Thankfully I never broke anything like it had to be in a cast, so yeah I don't really know what to tell you or anything, I just hope you get better really soon and this all strenghtens my opinion that horse riding is just dangerous.

When you lay on your belly, can you put that hand above your head? Maybe prop some pillows around it to try to protect it from being bumped.

I am very humbled by your honest concern and offers to help, words cannot explain my gratitude!

(((Rocketman)))) You nailed it on the head about the shower thing, I probly could have made a comic video for utube yesterday while standing in there trying to wash everything and shave with the wrong hand and holding my garbage bag covered arm up..... <sorry, TMI I know but it was pretty funny LOL>

I started using peas.... it works WAY better then the icebag!!! I cant put anything at all around it to protect it because even the weight from the peas is hard to take, but I am being extra careful. LOL Sleeping on my belly is just plain out because of where the rods are, there is no position that I can get into that doesnt make it throb. Maybe in a few more days though.

On a lighter note though, I have some good news.

I called the nurse yesterday, and through tears, told her of my problem. My surgeon called me back himself and was outraged with my pharmacy.... they had told me that without the actual insurance card in hand, that they could not fill the script and could not call to verify my billing number so I would need almost 300$ to fill it under a self pay.....

So He called a different pharmacy, they verifyed my insurance etc. The problem is that my insurance does not cover such a high dose but will cover the lower one but the pharmacy must have the original written script, they cant fill a narcotic without it. By this time, it was 6pm on Friday nite so.....
My doctor had them fill vicodin to get me through the weekend and I have to pick up a script for #120 5/325 percocets and double up.....cost? 10$ copay!!!!

Heres the real butt kicker though...... my pharmacy, who my whole family has used for years, was going to charge me almost 300$ and refused to take 5 minutes to verify my insurance....... This other pharmacy not only took care of me, but they said that if the vicodins didnt help, they could still fill the percs for.....( drumroll please) a whopping 105$$ Uhhhh........WHAT???? I bout fell out!!!! that is almost 200$ cheaper!!!! Long story short, I am switching pharmacies!!!!!

Meanwhile, the vicodin is not taking the pain completely away, but it is making it more bearable. I am thinking that I will go ahead and get the others filled next week and only take them to sleep. I will use the vicodins during the day since they arent as strong and I will still be able to function. Whadda Ya'll think????

I am way grovie today.
Our Pharmacy here in my little town is on it's 4th generation. I can call 24-7.

I can actually endure pain pretty good. The doc wanted to give me Percacet when I tore the ligaments in my hand. I talked him into loratab instead. I only took one the whole time.

I am glad you were able to get something. I could not of afforded $300 but would of figured out some way to help you.

I think that is an excellent plan. Just remember most pain meds do not take the pain totally away..................If the vicodan is making it 'tolerable' that is great, then the percocet at nite so you can get some rest as rest is also extremely important to healing.

Yes, showering is so much fun with a bag over your hand. NOT. Jeff and I both have recently experienced this.

Marte, many activities can be dangerous, but AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH to be one with your horse is wonderful...........................accidents happen, rofl

Liss I hope once you are healed that you will choose to ride again. I've lost count (of course, I'm 62, lol) of the times I've been thrown over the years, but I still love riding and do it when my knees allow, lol
