Phenylpropanolamine (PPA): Deadly
PPA is known to cause hemorrhagic strokes or cerebral bleeding, even with the very first use. It has been linked to to these complications in just three days after taking; especially in women ages 18-49 and infants. Severity of complications were not, however, the same for men and the scientists still don’t know why.
Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years. Unfortunately, the victims of this toxic substance have not. Medications containing this ingrdient were supposedly being recalled, however, they are still available over-the-counter in many areas. ALL drugs containing PPA are dangerous! You may want to call the 800 number listed on most labels to inquire if they’re removed PPA and about a REFUND; another critical reason to make it a practice to read labels. 1. Adutrim Diet Gum 2. Acutrim Pluss 3. Acutrim Maximum Strength 4. Alka-Seltzer Plus Children’s Cold Medicine 5. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original 6. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold and Flu 7. Alka-Seltzer Cold and Sinus 8. This is a very old story which has been making the rounds again. Here's an update on snopes:
snopes.com: PPA Advisory Alert Claim: Drug products containing PPA (phenylpropanolamine) were pulled from the market due to FDA concerns over a possible connection to strokes. TRUE BUT OUTDATED Examples: [Collected via e-mail, January 2005] ... The list of products cited in the e-mail quoted above (which originally circulated in 2000) is therefore several years out of date, as the FDA has noted: We have received numerous requests for a list of products containing PPA. Since companies continue to reformulate their products, FDA is not maintaining a comprehensive, updated list of products that still contain PPA. FDA is aware of emails circulating widely that list many products allegedly containing PPA. These emails, however, generally contain dated and inaccurate information and should be ignored. The FDA recommends that consumers read the labels of OTC drug products to determine if the product contains PPA.

All I know is that PPA makes me "high" (which I don't want to be, LOL), so I'm glad to hear that manufacturers are taking it out of their products

No wonder Contac had me stoned off my a**.
Thanks for posting this Chy - Alka Seltzer is my favorite cold remedy. I'll read the label before I pass it up, but I wonder if it'll work as well without PPA? Irrelevant, I s'pose.... |

I've never been able to take cold medicine, it makes me really ill. Maybe it was the PPA? I dunno. I hadn't heard about it at all so thought it was good to share even if outdated just in case you know? The article I read it from was current and I don't ever think about snopes but anyway.. good to be aware, figure if I wasn't aware maybe someone else wasn't.

It was quite a miserable experience; so much so that I never took it again.
