Default Lung Cancer Statistics

Among cancers, the most common is lung cancer. Lung cancer, which is seen among 90% in men and 80% in women, is mainly caused by smoking cigarettes.[B] Smoking and lung cancer are closely associated. The statistics of lung cancer are alarmingly high. The other cancers caused by smoking are cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, cervix, stomach, kidney and pancreas.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death and the first disease to be linked with smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths due to cancer and smoking is responsible for most of them. Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to be affected by lung cancer and women are 13 times more susceptible compared to non-smokers. The cancer causing agents in tobacco damage certain important genes which are vital for cell growth. This causes the cell to grow abnormally and reproduce very fast leading to cancer. The main cause of esophageal cancer in the U.S is due to smoking. Smoking combined with alcohol consumption is the leading cause for laryngeal cancer cases. For smokers the risks due to cancer increase with the number of cigarettes smoked and the number of years smoked. The risks decrease soon after quitting. The probability of developing lung cancer is equally high while using cigarettes with low tar yield. The probability of developing mouth cancer is high while smoking. The risk is high among people who smoke cigars, and pipes. The risk of cervical cancer increases among women while smoking.

Smoking damages almost all parts of the body and is injurious to people from all stages of life including infants, children, teenagers, adults and seniors.
