Default Cigarette Smoking and Women

Despite the hazards of smoking 28% of men and 24% of women are smokers. Women account for 39% of smoking related deaths. Most of the women who smoke are between the ages of 25 and 44.

Smoking causes greater health hazards in women than in men. The chances of heart attack are 50% more in female smokers than in male smokers. Research also says that chances of lung cancer in women are higher. Smoking also causes many reproductive problems. Female smokers using oral contraceptives are under high risk of developing blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. The risk increases with age and women over 35 years of age need to be particularly careful. Smoking during pregnancy might be very risky. It causes threat to her unborn baby. The chemicals in tobacco are passed from the smoking mother to her fetus through the blood stream. Smoking might cause preterm delivery, low birth weight, premature rupture of membranes, placenta previa, miscarriage, and neonatal death. Kids of female smokers are known to suffer from frequent colds, ear aches and respiratory problems.

Women are known to be more prone to smoking than men. It is also found that women find it harder to quit . Nicotine has different mood effects on men than in women. Women go through greater withdrawal symptoms like stress and anxiety than men when they quit smoking. Women are more behaviorally addicted to tobacco which makes it more difficult to quit smoking. Pregnant women are generally prohibited from using most of the quit smoking aids. Women are more conscious of weight gain after quitting smoking.
