Approved Research Addiction Study

I have just commenced my final year on the Essex-Tavistock Clinical Psychology Doctorate, based in Colchester, Essex, at the University of Essex and linked with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in London.

For my thesis I am interested in comparing the childhood experiences of people who go on to develop sexual, drug, alcohol and gambling addictive or compulsive behaviours. This is a subject which, as far as I am aware, has not previously been studied systematically. My hope is that my research would add to the knowledge which we have about these conditions, and that this would inform therapists and counsellors working with adults with problems of sex addiction, as well as informing people involved in protecting or treating children about the long-term consequences of disturbing experiences in childhood.

> The research will involve respondents completing questions about their current behaviours, childhood experiences and general information. The questionnaires will be anonymous, so that it will be impossible for me to identify the respondents from the information that they submit. I do not envisage that the questionnaires would be upsetting for most people, and some may find it interesting. However, links to various support groups will be provided at the end of the survey, should respondents become distressed by the questions or their answers. Once the project is completed, a summary will be provided on the webpage for respondents to look at if they are interested. All results would also be fed back to the organisations that agree to advertise my study on their webpage.
